Help Keeping Symbols and Traditions of Christmas

Posted by .Sean (Fired Up! Missouri)

If some godless socialist from the ACLU thwarted your Christmas celebration this year, then you should probably call Todd Akin and beg him to keep fighting for an extremely important Congressional resolution to protect “the symbols and traditions of Christmas…for use by those who celebrate Christmas.”

Akin has cosponsored House Resolution 951 to show you just how much he loves Christmas. It reads:

Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the symbols and traditions of Christmas should be protected for use by those who celebrate Christmas. Read the rest of this entry »

President Obama’s Preliminary Information Regarding Detroit Incident

11:26 A.M.

THE PRESIDENT:   Good morning.  Yesterday I updated the American people on the immediate steps we took — the increased screening and security of air travel — to keep our country safe in the wake of the attempted terrorist attack on Christmas Day.  And I announced two reviews — a review of our terrorist watch list system and a review of our air travel screening, so we can find out what went wrong, fix it and prevent future attacks.

Those reviews began on Sunday and are now underway.  Earlier today I issued the former guidelines for those reviews and directed that preliminary findings be provided to the White House by this Thursday.  It’s essential that we diagnose the problems quickly and deal with them immediately. President’s Remarks on Passage of Health Insurance Reform

8:47 A.M. EST

THE PRESIDENT:  Good morning, everybody.  In a historic vote that took place this morning members of the Senate joined their colleagues in the House of Representatives to pass a landmark health insurance reform package — legislation that brings us toward the end of a nearly century-long struggle to reform America’s health care system.

Ever since Teddy Roosevelt first called for reform in 1912, seven Presidents — Democrats and Republicans alike — have taken up the cause of reform.  Time and time again, such efforts have been blocked by special interest lobbyists who’ve perpetuated a status quo that works better for the insurance industry than it does for the American people.  But with passage of reform bills in both the House and the Senate, we are now finally poised to deliver on the promise of real, meaningful health insurance reform that will bring additional security and stability to the American people. Grandparents Scam

Attorney General Koster warns Missouri seniors of “grandparent scam”

Jefferson City, Mo. – Attorney General Chris Koster today issued a Consumer Alert warning Missouri seniors of a scam aimed at swindling grandparents out of their savings.

Koster said the scammers will place a phone call to unsuspecting seniors posing as their grandchild, saying he has been in an accident, is in jail-most often for drunk driving-or that the grandchild is in some other kind of trouble. He said the caller often says that the grandchild is in Canada and asks the grandparent to wire money there via Western Union. Koster said one worried Missouri grandparent wired more than $20,000 after receiving a call from her “grandson” saying that he had been arrested for DWI in Canada and needed her to send money.

Koster said that consumer complaint reports his office has received indicate that the callers have an uncanny amount of personal information about the family, often knowing the grandparent and grandchild’s name.

“The fact that these scammers take advantage of a grandparent’s love for their grandchildren by placing these alarming and frightening calls to con them out of thousands of dollars is simply unconscionable,” Koster said. “I urge anyone receiving such a call to check with family members to confirm the call is a hoax. I also urge individuals to report the call to the Attorney General’s Consumer Hotline at 1-800-392-8222.”

Heathcare Bill Passed

After months of blown deadlines and political near-death experiences, a sweeping health care reform bill cleared the Senate on Thursday on a party-line vote, putting President Barack Obama within reach of a domestic policy achievement that has eluded Democrats for decades.

Neosho Man Guilty of Violating Missouri Prevailing Wage Law

Attorney General Koster says Neosho man convicted for prevailing wage violations, placed on contractor debarment list

Jefferson City, Mo. - Attorney General Chris Koster today announced a Neosho man has been sentenced to fourteen days in jail and placed on Missouri’s contractor debarment list for one year after being found guilty of violating Missouri’s prevailing wage law.

Koster said being on the debarment list means Michael B. Robin and any company he owns cannot contract directly or indirectly with any public body for the construction of any public works for that period of time. This is the first time in state history that the Attorney General’s office has placed a prevailing wage violator on the statewide debarment list. Read the rest of this entry »

Health Care Bill Votes

Submitted by .Sean (Fired Up! Missouri)

Early this morning (01:08 AM), Senate Democrats and independents approved a procedural cloture motion by a 60-40 vote.  Senators voted m. while seated at their desks, a rarely used practice implemented only for historic votes.

There are two more procedural votes scheduled on the bill this week, and the final vote is currently slated for 7pm. Christmas Eve. Then, of course, Senate and House negotiators will have to meld their bills together for a final compromise.

Sen. McCaskill vote Yea, Sen. Bond voted Nay.

President on Health Care and Climate Change

Saturday, Dec 19, 1:42 P.M. EST

THE PRESIDENT:  Hello.  Good afternoon, everybody.  You know that I am from Chicago, so let me first say that with the place where I live covered with snow I’m finally starting to feel like home.  And I am sorry to drag you guys out in this weather, but I wanted to speak briefly to you about the significant progress that we’ve made on two of the major challenges facing the American people:  the crushing cost of health care and our dangerous dependence on fossil fuels.

On health care, with today’s developments it now appears that the American people will have the vote they deserve on genuine reform that offers security to those who have health insurance and affordable options to those for do not.  And so I want to thank Senator Harry Reid and every senator who’s been working around the clock to make this happen.
