Vietnam 1966

(Submitted by Unknown Person)

Richard, (my husband), never really talked a lot about his time in Vietnam , other than he had been shot by a sniper. However, he had a rather grainy, 8 x 10 black and white photo he had taken at a USO show of Ann Margret with Bob Hope in the background that was one of his treasures.

A few years ago, Ann Margret was doing a book signing at a local bookstore. Richard wanted to see if he could get her to sign the treasured photo so he arrived at the bookstore at 12 o’clock for the 7:30 signing.

When I got there after work, the line went all the way around the bookstore, circled the parking lot, and disappeared behind a parking garage. Before her appearance, bookstore employees announced that she would sign only her book and no memorabilia would be permitted.

Richard  was disappointed, but wanted to show her the photo and let her know how much those shows meant to lonely GI’s so far from home. Ann Margret came out looking as beautiful as ever and, as second in line, it was soon Richard’s turn.

He presented the book for her signature and then took out the photo. When he did, there were many shouts from the employees that she would not sign it. Richard said, “I understand. I just wanted her to see it.”

She took one look at the photo, tears welled up in her eyes and she said, “This is one of my gentlemen from  Vietnam and I most certainly will sign his photo. I know what these men did for their country and I always have time for ‘my gentlemen.”  Richard with Ann Margaret

With that, she pulled Richard across the table and planted a big kiss on him. She then made quite a to-do about the bravery of the young men she met over the years, how much she admired them, and how much she appreciated them. There weren’t too many dry eyes among those close enough to hear. She then posed for pictures and acted as if he were the only one there.

Later at dinner, Richard was very quiet. When I asked if he’d like to talk about it, my big, strong husband broke down in tears.. ”That’s the first time anyone ever thanked me for my time in the Army,” he said.

That night was a turning point for him. He walked a little straighter and, for the first time in years, was proud to have been a Vet. I’ll never forget Ann Margret for her graciousness and how much that small act of kindness meant to my husband.

I now make it a point to say ‘Thank you’ to every person I come across who served in our Armed Forces. Freedom does not come cheap and I am grateful for all those who have served their country.

If you’d like to pass on this story, feel free to do so. Perhaps it will help others to become aware of how important it is to acknowledge the contribution our service people make.

You’re a 19-year-old kid. You’re critically wounded and dying in the jungle somewhere in the Central Highlands of Vietnam.

It’s November 11, 1967. LZ (landing zone) X-ray. Your unit is outnumbered 8-1 and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 yards away, that your CO (commanding officer) has ordered the MedEvac helicopters to stop coming in.

You’re lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns and you know you’re not getting out. Read the rest of this entry »

Missouri Tea Party Groups Have NOT Endorsed Roy Blunt for U. S. Senate

The following list of Tea Party organizations, from across the state of Missouri, have NOT endorsed Roy Blunt in his campaign for the U.S. Senate seat.  When we received a notification that Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, a strong supporter of Tea Parties nationally, and the originator of a “Tea Party Caucus” in Washington last week, will be coming to Missouri on July 31st to make phone calls with Roy Blunt from the St. Louis GOP headquarters, and to be a featured speaker at a Blunt fundraiser that night, we were shocked.  We believe she has been grossly misled if she understands him to be a Missouri Tea Party candidate.

Tea Party participants believe the spending in Washington has to STOP.  Roy Blunt voted for TARP and Cash for Clunkers.  For Michele Bachmann to come to Missouri and give the impression that all the Missouri Tea Parties support Roy Blunt is an abomination of everything we have been standing up for.  “Most Tea Party supporters I know will be baffled by Michele Bachmann helping someone with a record like Roy Blunt before the primary vote,” said Jedidiah Smith, a Tea Party leader in Franklin County, Missouri. Gov. Nixon announces infrastructure grant to Potosi, helping Red Wing Shoe Company

“It’s a positive sign for the Show-Me State’s economy when a local employer chooses to expand its operations, further invest in our state, and hire more hard-working Missourians,” Gov. Nixon said. “The Red Wing Shoe Company is a well-known, century-old brand that has been a vital part of the economy Potosi and Washington County for more than 15 years. Is KFC Misleading Customers?

by Linda Sedrick Pearson

According to a report by Shane Borer, Kentucky Fried Chicken is misleading customers. KFCs sales promotion is that for every pink bucket of chicken purchased, KFC will donate fifty cents to the Susan G. Komen foundation for breast cancer research. Borer states that is not the case and that you can see for yourself by reading the fine print of the sales promotion.

“KFC restaurant operations have contributed 50 cents to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure for each Komen branded bucket purchased by the operators.”

Borer goes on to say that Kentucky Fried Chicken’s promotion misleads customers because the promotion sounds like another $.50 will be donated to the cancer research foundation. In fact, KFC has already donated the $.50 by purchasing the pink buckets and are charging cutomers $.50 more for an order of one of these buckets full of chicken.

So is KFC misleading customers? You decide. However if you would like to make a donation (or read more about the research) and bypass this little controversy, go directly to the Susan G. Komen foundation web site.
